Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation that indicates the level of body fatness. It is an indicator of possible weight problems. While not a replacement for more extensive diagnostics, it can nevertheless give a reliable indication of how someone compares to the rest of the population in terms of weight.

Calculated the same way for people of all ages and both genders, BMI does not take into account muscle mass. As a result, some athletes may have a high BMI but nevertheless be in great physical condition.

If you are not an athlete but have a high BMI, you should view your score as a wakeup call to avoid the potential for catastrophic health problems in the future. Health conditions associated with obesity include hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, and even some cancers.
